What I love about art ?

My tribe is hosting another blog hop ... and the theme got me thinking (which is a good thing - most of the time ...)
"What do I love about art?" The first emotion I realized when I read that question was - joy. Pure Joy. Because after all those years of "I'm so sorry for myself - I can't draw, therefore I can't be an artist" I learnt during the last years that my way of expressing myself is indeed - ART.
Let me explain this a bit further. When I went to school, I never was good at drawing. Sometimes I did ok, but never "good". So my grades were ok, but no more. What I loved to do (and still love ... ) were abstract doodlings like the one you see in the first picture. 

Once we got to do a painting with water colors, and the theme was abstract: "Hard against soft". My classmates whined - a lot. Me? I was happy! I did what was asked from me, had TONS of fun doing it and I got a "Very Good"-grade for this single piece (unfortunately, this painting is lost ...).
Fast forward to my late twenties (the time before was spent getting a decent education ... if a master's degree in Political and Educational Sciences are a decent education ). After I started my dayjob, my creative voice started nagging at me again. Even as a child I loved playing with pieces of fabric ... and so, I did my first steps into patchwork.

And never looked back - I created, with fabrics, using as much colors as possible. Slowly, very slowly, my quilts became more "me", more liberated, some may say - wilder. 

"Don't you love a good mystery, too?" -2009

Let's jump to 2009 now - it was the year I entered a quilt in a quilt show in the US. I liked the quilt (based on a mystery by Pia Welsch) - but I was shocked and thrilled when I learnt that my quilt had won first prize in the category "cutting edge". WOW !! (here's the blog post about it). There it was - joy. A lot of it. Happiness. Pride. And I started to realize - what I'm doing with my quilts is - ART. So, the answer to the question what I love about art is first: I love the pure joy it gives me. The satisfaction of looking at a finished quilt with a "YES!" in my heart. The thrill when others tell me they like / they love my work. The feeling of belonging to a commutity of like-minded people - that's a feeling like being at home. So art gave me an extended home, so to say - and I love that, too!

Als erstes muß ich mal überlegen, wie ich "tribe" korrekt ins Deutsche übersetze ... Clan scheint mir zu passen. Also, mein Clan veranstaltet gerade eine Blog-Party, und das Thema brachte mich ganz schön ans Denken (was ja eher was Gutes ist ...):
"Was liebe ich an der Kunst?" Die erste Gefühlsregung beim Lesen dieser Frage war - Freude. Einfache, pure Freude. Warum? Weil nach x Jahren von "Ach wie schade, ich kann nicht zeichnen, also bin ich auch keine Künstlerin" habe ich in den letzten Jahren gelernt: was ich da so mache, um "mich" auszudrücken - das ist Kunst.
Das muß ich ein bißchen genauer erklären. In der Schule war Zeichnen nie mein starkes Fach. Manchmal war's ganz ok, aber für "Gut" hat's eigentlich nie gereicht. Was ich supergerne gemacht habe (und immer noch liebe ...) waren abstrakte Kritzeleien wie das, was ihr hier im ersten Bild seht.
Irgendwann mal bekamen wir dann eine Aufgabe (für's Arbeiten mit Wasserfarben) - mit abstraktem Thema: "Hart gegen weich". Meine Klassenkameraden haben gestöhnt, heftig sogar. Ich? War einfach nur glücklich! Das Thema "sprang" mich geradezu an, ich hatte jede Menge Spaß beim Malen, und die Note war eine 1-2. (Blöderweise existiert dieses Bild nicht mehr - das ist echt schade ...)
Nach dem Studium fing ich an zu arbeiten - und mein kreatives Männchen im Ohr fing wieder an, sich bemerkbar zu machen. Schon als Kind hatten mich kleine Stoffstückchen fasziniert - und so fing ich an, mit Patchwork herumzuspielen. Ganz langsam wurden meine Quilts dann mehr "meine" Quilts, wurden freier - manche sagen auch - wilder ;-))
2009 passierte es dann - ich meldete einen Quilt für eine Quiltausstellung in den USA an. Der Quilt gefiel mir gut (er entsprang einem Mystery von Pia Welsch) - aber ich war absolut geschockt und hingerissen, als ich erfuhr, daß mein Quilt den ersten Preis in der Kategorie "Cutting Edge" bekommen hatte. WOW !! (hier ist der Blog Post dazu). Da war sie - reine Freude. Jede Menge davon. Glück. Stolz. Und ich begann zu begreifen - was ich da mache, mit meinen Quilts ... das ist Kunst.
Also lautet die Antwort auf die Frage, was ich an Kunst so liebe: Ich liebe diese reine Freude, die sie mir gibt. Die Befriedigung, wenn ich einen fertigen Quilt ansehe mit einem "JA!" im Herzen. Den Hüpfer im Herzen, wenn andere mir sagen, daß sie meine Sachen mögen / vielleicht sogar lieben. Das Gefühl, zu einer großen Gemeinschaft von Gleichgesinnten zu gehören - das ist ein Gefühl wie zu-Hause-sein.
